Volvo Ocean Legends Regatta and Reunion

The great and the good from the 37-year history of the Volvo and its predecessor Whitbread races are already putting the first week of November 2011 in their diaries, following the announcement of the Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta and Reunion to be held in Alicante 1 – 5 November 2011.

Future events which may qualify participants for membership:

Volvo Ocean Race 2011/12 Leg 1 will depart Alicante on 5th November 2011. The course has changed again. Alicante - Cape Town - Abu Dhabi - Sanya, Hainan, China - Auckland - Itajaí, Brasil - Miami - Lisbon - Lorient - Galway. Bonus points for capturing a Somali pirate? Disqualified and not ransomed if you get captured?

 

Relatively recent events which qualified participants for membership:

Vendée Globe 2008/09 - this started on 9 November, 2008 from Les Sables d'Olonne, France. It is a non-stop circumnavigation for solo sailors in Open 60 class yachts. It is the sixth such race. As of 16th Feb 09, 6 of the 11 contestants had finished.

Volvo Ocean Race 2008/09 - started at Alicante, Spain on 4 Oct 2008. It is an 11 leg race world-the-around for fully crewed yachts which have been built to the Volvo Open 70 Rule. As of 16th Feb 09, the 5 contestants are on the epic 12,300 Nm Cape Horners qualifying Leg 5 from Quingdao, China to Rio de Janeiro.

The first Barcelona World Race started from Barcelona on 11th November 2007. It was a non-stop east bound race for 60 ft yachts with a crew of 2. Nine yachts started and five completed the race. Voyages lasted between 92 and 108 days.
